OpenAI's AI Classifier was a bust 📉

And a collective cry of disappointment was heard from every educator worldwide.

The classifier tool, which was supposed to be able to tell the difference between human-written text and AI-generated text, was actually pretty bad at its job. It only correctly identified AI-generated text 26% of the time, and it also incorrectly identified human-written text as AI-generated text 9% of the time.

But they’re not shouting it from the rooftops. OpenAI has quietly shut down the AI Classifier last week after only 6 months of operations. So much for that.

The explanation for its demise was quietly added to the blog post that first announced the tool, like a ghost haunting its own grave.

OpenAI says that it's working on developing a new AI detection tool that will be more accurate. AI Classifier by no means was the only AI detection tool in town, but it was created by one of the most dominant platforms. Maybe the lapse in performance will give another entity the chance to rise to the occasion.
