Pentagon takes AI for a spin
For the first time, the US Air Force is running large-language models to perform military tasks. Coronel Strohmeyer, who has worked for the US Defense Department for years, commented that “we are learning that this is possible for us to do” after the first trial.
“[the test] was highly successful, it was very fast”
Large-language models (LLMs), like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard, are trained on vast amounts of internet data to generate human-like responses to user prompts. The Defense Department is currently conducting experiments using five LLMs to develop data integration and digital platforms in the military.
The ongoing military exercise, which ends on July 26, tests whether LLMs can generate new options for military officials. In this demonstration, an LLM was fed 60,000 pages of open-source data, including military documents from the US and China.
Florida schools debut AI courses for students
While many industries fear losing jobs to AI, some schools in Florida are getting ahead of the curve by preparing students for a future career using AI tools.
My personal opinion, as an educator and as the leader of a STEM school, is that we need to embrace and explore this technology
The Angeline Academy of Innovation is one of Florida’s first schools to offer AI courses as part of the Florida Department of Education Division of Career and Technical Education Programs.
Angeline Academy of Innovation will also train teachers this summer on AI tools they can use in their instruction as well as help students use AI tools responsibly.
Among others, Florida Virtual School Program has joined the movement by offering AI industry courses for its high school students.
Online education has also played a significant role in democratizing access to AI education, enabling individuals from diverse educational levels to learn about AI.
edX.org, an online education platform that has 70+ million users, recently unveiled a collaborative initiative with the University of Central Florida and 11 other US universities to offer a new program in AI and machine learning.
