No Netflix, No Chill

In 2020 we all learned the importance of writing plans in pencil not pen. Thank God we had Netflix to distract us from our ever-changing reality. Now, with what’s coming to be known as the writers’ strike of 2023, our security blanket may have to come in the form of something else.

It's like people don’t appreciate their content being stolen, imagine that. More on that tomorrow.

AI-tocracy

What in the AI does that mean?

Time for a history and English lesson. You’re welcome.

“Cracy” = power. So, democracy means power to the “demo” = people. “Autocracy” means the rule of one. Think automobile – who’s driving the car? One person.

So, the idea behind an “AI-tocracy” is that whatever autocracy controls AI controls the people. We’re talking next-level control, Minority Report style.

But, this is not just a concept, this is a reality for one of the most autocratic governments today: China. It uses AI in the form of surveillance, i.e. facial recognition and weather pattern prediction (yep, there are more riots based on the weather outside), to manage unrest in its provinces. Not only does this boost government control, but it also boosts technological innovation as tech firms that got government contracts had a 49% increase in software production.

This begs the next question …

Who watches the watchmen? And is it a good idea for that much power to be in the hands of the few vs the many? If only history had some noteworthy examples of when too much power was in too few hands …

Tools For Your Radar:
CM3Leon and Air AI

CM3Leon

We’ve talked about the multimodality (image-text capability) of AI last week when we reviewed Bard.

Pretty crazy that you can upload a picture to have it analyzed and processed. No more filling out travel expense forms for your receipts. However, Meta’s CM3Leon takes it a step further with image generation and description.

There’s no public release date yet, like Musk’s xAI, but this is definitely one to keep on eye out for.

Air AI

Air AI is projected to eliminate the pesky human problems of finite and fallible memory, with perfect recall and infinite memory. Say ‘goodbye’ to an extensive sales and customer service departments and ‘hello’ to real, conversational AI. You can’t say it yet, but you will be when it comes soon.
