AI Goes Back to School

School’s about to be back in session.

But it’ll be far from business as usual.

Until last November with the release of ChatGPT, the fastest way to get help on your homework was to phone a nerdy friend.

Where would The Breakfast Club be without Brian? Stuck in another Saturday class.

Now, instantaneous answers are only a text input away.

Instead of trying to beat Open AI at its own game, Pearson, the textbook giant, will be offering a new service altogether just in time for fall – an AI powered study buddy chatbot. The bot is designed to help students with their homework and answer their questions in real-time.

Benefits of this chatbot would include personalized tutoring and self-paced learning. It could also help students to stay on track and avoid procrastination.

On the other hand, no one is surprised that cheating is an issue. Another disadvantage is that info from the chatbot could be inaccurate, misleading or biased. AI study buddies can suffer hallucinations, too.

And they could be expensive. 💰

There’s also competition.

Chegg, the textbook rental company, already hosts Chegg Study – a human tutoring service where questions get answered by live humans without the use of AI.

It’s also working alongside OpenAI to produce Cheggmate, an AI-driven study bot not yet released.

AI is significantly altering the way we learn and traditional education just might get left behind. One more reason it’s a good thing you passed on that teaching job.

GPT 5 is Coming!

… but not anytime soon. 😞

A few days ago, OpenAI filed a patent for GPT 5 with a release date yet to be announced.

GPT 5 is in the process of being trademarked, but that doesn’t mean we have a clear picture of what its final form will be.

Think of this patent as a placeholder. GPT 5 could look like anything under the sun, but our bet’s on a glorified version of GPT 4.

With all the shenanigans surrounding Twitter and X, reserving names and brand protection is just that important.

AI Guy thinks OpenAI made a good choice in reserving its name before someone else did. 👍👍

And the other good news is that there will eventually be a ChatGPT run off of GPT 5.

Doubling down on AI development is pretty cray considering the dangers of AI is what keeps OpenAI CEO Sam Altman up at night. Check out this absolutely stunning quote from a recent interview:

What I lose the most sleep over is the hypothetical idea that we already have done something really bad by launching ChatGPT. That maybe there was something hard and complicated in there
(the system) that we didn't understand and have now already kicked it off.

Sam Altman

Our best guess at translating that in light of Altman’s state of mind is:
“it is what it is”.
