“We Have No Moat” 🚣🏽‍♂️

Google is scared. 👻

A leaked internal Google document says "we have no moat, and neither does OpenAI". Meaning, Google does not have any sustainable competitive advantages, but neither do their closest competitors like Open AI.

It continues with Google’s admission of their limited capabilities:

“While our models still hold a slight edge in terms of quality, the gap is closing astonishingly quickly. Open-source models are faster, more customizable, more private, and pound-for-pound more capable. They are doing things with $100 and 13B params that we struggle with at $10M and 540B. And they are doing so in weeks, not months.”

The market for generative AI is anybody’s game…

Meta and Microsoft Team Up 🤝

Microsoft and Meta have teamed up, with Meta citing Microsoft as its “preferred partner”.

This time they’re bringing you Llama 2: a commercial version of the open-source generative AI with twice the spit, I mean, spunk. Continuing the battle for AI dominance, Amjad Masad, chief executive at Replit, comments that:

“Commercial Llama could change the picture. Any incremental improvement in open-source models is eating into the market share of closed-source models because you can run them cheaply and have less dependency."

So if a free, unrestricted, and quality model of generative AI is available to anyone, closed-source AIs will be having an identity crisis when it comes to value add that hits harder than the first time you realize you’re balding.

Clearly, McDonald’s would have been the only current answer (was there ever any doubt?)

Open-source clearly won this round, but the battle is TBD.

Sure, the pictures have a hint of AI stylization and flaws, but it’s so good even my conservative mother-in-law wants to download the “Chinabot” just for the glow-up.
