Generative AI’s Darkside 🖤 

Here’s something not often talked about:

generative AI uses data without explicit consent and has zero compensation.

Meaning, things like ChatGBT and Bard scan the entire interwebs for data,

without checking to see if anything you posted could be used by them.

Using Gmail to run your company? Bard might process data from it for insight in the future.

Are you a lawyer using Zoom for an initial consultation, or something else?

There’s an unlisted guest in that meeting

and they are definitely taking notes.

Zoom updated its terms of service to include data pulling 

that users can’t opt out of in March.

Not just text in the chatbox or the audio, but

this includes facial recognition.

The tradeoff is that you can use large language models virtually for “free”.

But it’s not really for free.

Keep in mind one of most important lessons from The Social Dilemma that

“if you’re not paying for the product, then you are the product”.

Usually if we get bent over, we expect dinner first at least.

The ongoing writer’s strike is a great example of the dangers of invasive AI and a strong push for content protection.

We’d be wise to mimic this advice.

But humans are really known for doing the wise thing :/

Exactly how much accommodation and consideration there is for

human privacy

safety, and

overall trust

is anyone’s game.

We’ll see exactly where the chips lie when AI has gone through a chunk of the regulation process.
