The Beatles Use AI

A Wrap of the Week's AI News

TLDR;

  • The EU Regulates AI – the first AI regulation we’ve seen worldwide regulates AI biometric recognition and requires EU approval before new AI products are released.

  • Meta releases a new AI Image generation Model that uses background knowledge and “common sense” logic to generate graphics and fill in images rather than brute force logic.

  • Amazon cracks down on AI-generated reviews while also implementing its own AI-generated summaries for products onsite.

  • The Beatles announce their last single which uses AI to recreate John Lennon’s voice.

EU Regulation of AI

EU Regulation of AI: Brace yourselves, folks, because the European Parliament has dropped the mic with the world's first AI regulation. It's like a rulebook for AI, complete with checks on generative AI programs. AI leaders like OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Tesla’s Elon Musk have long called for AI regulation. This move makes the EU the world’s first mover in AI regulation.

So what’s in it?

The European Union’s “AI Act” includes:

  • New generative AI programs, such as OpenAI’s Chat-GPT, are to be reviewed by an EU regulatory body before commercial release

  • Ban on releasing public biometric AI functions, such as the ability for real-time facial recognition in security cameras.

  • Classifying AI systems into four levels of risk, from minimal to unacceptable, and requiring data transparency in high-risk groups.

  • Fines of up to €30 million ($33 million) or 6% of a company’s annual global revenue for violations of these regulations

The Ai Act is expected to be approved by the end of this year.

Meta’s New AI imaging

Meta is releasing a new AI Image generation program that uses a more “common sense” approach to filling in the gaps of an image. Meta’s new product can analyze and complete unfinished images better than existing programs by using background knowledge instead of simple image inferences.

Meta will incorporate this improved methodology into its existing products, including features on ads and Instagram posts that allow users to generate image backgrounds and alter their images based on typing prompts.

Meta’s executives have distanced themselves from other tech leaders on the issue of AI regulation. More recently, Meta refused to sign an open letter from AI researchers to ramp up Ai regulation and stop the AI-induced end of humanity. Top executives from Google, Microsoft, Deepmind, and OpenAI have signed the letter.

Amazon: Fake Reviews and… Fake Descriptions?

In the battle against fake reviews, Amazon is arming itself with AI tools to crack down on AI-generated reviews and fake review brokers from their site. Fake reviews are a huge issue for Amazon, in 2022 the company reported over 23,000 social media groups with millions of combined members facilitating fake reviews on the site.

While traditional methods of spotting these reviews are lackluster, Amazon’s new AI program promises to better identify fake reviews and prevent fake review brokers.

Amazon has also started testing generative AI tools that automatically write product summaries using the reviews of customers.

“However, the majority of customers have expressed negative opinions on these aspects,” the summary states. “For example, some customers have paid over $100 for a toy that wasn’t worth it, while others have experienced issues with the product’s quality and charging.”

The Beatles Ressurected by AI

The Beatles have chosen to not Let It Be and will release a final record using John Lennon's AI-resurrected voice. Using the power of artificial intelligence, they've managed to isolate John Lennon's voice from prior recordings and reproduce it for one last Beatles record. It's a mix of nostalgia and cutting-edge technology that'll leave you in awe.

“It's kind of scary but exciting, because it's the future. We'll just have to see where that leads”

Sir Paul McCartney

Just goes to show what humans can do with AI when we all Come Together.
