Twitter limits views to stop AI scraping🤖

Over the long holiday weekend, Elon Musk shut down public access to Twitter, requiring users to be logged in to read anything on the platform.

For decades, the tech world has been built on the ideals of an open web. However, with the emergence of ChatGPT and other AI tools, this open web is closing itself up.

To develop generative AI tools, a gargantuan amount of human data is fed to each program in order for the models to understand human expression.

The most notable example of this is OpenAI’s use of Twitter to feed ChatGPT with data. OpenAI was licensed Twitter's data — which was a feed of every tweet — for around $2 million a year to help build ChatGPT.

Now, every one of these social media sites is being swamped by AI-generated input. And, on the other side, AI companies are aggressively scraping posts from humans which is wreaking havoc on these sites.

Musk said that limiting Tweet views was a response to this form of “data pillaging” by other companies that were continuously scraping its pages for tweets.

Startup builds AI supercomputer 💻

Inflection AI, a startup focused on creating “personal AI for everyone,” has developed an impressive supercomputer powered by 22,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs. This places it as one of the largest AI-based supercomputers in the industry, just behind AMD's Frontier.

Inflection AI gained recognition for its Inflection-1 AI model, which performs well in “common sense” tasks and personal assistance applications.

The standout feature of Inflection AI's supercomputer is the acquisition of 22,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs. Obtaining even a single unit of these GPUs has been challenging due to high demand and limited supply.

However, NVIDIA, considering an investment in Inflection AI, has made it possible for the company to acquire such a substantial number. Inflection AI has raised $1.5 billion in investments, valuing the company at $4 billion.

New law on NYC employers using AI 💻

Starting today, New York’s new automated employment decision tools (AEDT) law goes into effect. The law requires companies to disclose if they are using AI in their hiring process and conduct annual third-party “bias audits” to identify any discrimination.

The law aims to track and analyze the use of AI to make improvements over time, but critics argue that it imposes burdensome requirements and penalties, especially for small businesses.

The law focuses specifically on AI tools that directly impact hiring outcomes, aiming to replace human decision-making. Companies failing to comply with the law can face fines ranging from $500 to $1,500 for subsequent violations.
