Creatives sue OpenAI for copyright infringement

Comedian Sarah Silverman has taken legal action against OpenAI and Meta for copyright infringement.

Silverman, along with authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey, claims that their copyrighted works were used without permission to train AI models.

These models, like the widely popular ChatGPT chatbot, rely on vast amounts of data from the internet to provide convincing responses to users. The lawsuit argues that the authors did not consent to their books being ingested and used for training purposes.

The lawsuit focuses on the unauthorized use of Silverman’s 2010 book “The Bedwetter”.

In a separate lawsuit, Getty Images is suing Stable Diffusion, an AI image generator, for alleged copyright breaches.

Three artists, Sarah Andersen, Kelly McKernan, and Karla Ortiz, are taking similar legal action against image generators Stability AI, Midjourney, and DeviantArt.

OpenAI and Meta have yet to respond to the legal claims, leaving the future of AI models and their use of copyrighted material in question.
