AI vs. New York Times 📃  

As you may know, language learning models (LLMs) are the brains behind AI tools.

For example, ChatGPT runs on the LLM called “GPT”,

and when you pay $20/month to get ChatGPT pro, you’re really just getting access to a tool that uses a better brain.

(with ChatGPT pro, you get access to GPT 4.0 instead of GPT 3.5)

For these LLMs to learn, they are fed huge amounts of info.

A lot of which comes from the internet.

ChatGPT was trained on billions of web pages

and Open AI did this without necessarily asking…

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, did pay for some data

Such as access to millions of Tweets (which Elon wasn’t happy about)

However, what happens if you put something on the internet and you don’t want LLMs to use that data to train themselves?

The New York Times is attempting to prevent LLMs from using its data.

The publication just updated its T&Cs to include rules that forbid its content from being used to train LLMs.

This means GPT can’t use text & images from New York Times articles when it is learning.

Google recently granted itself permission to train its AI tool ‘Bard’ on public data it collects from the web.

NYT's prior $100 million partnership with Google for content features raises questions about the target of these new terms…

possibly targeting OpenAI or Microsoft.
